Author Spotlight with Susan Day

Today I am excited to welcome Susan Day to Fire and Ice!

Susan Day is passionate about children's literature and wants to inspire children to follow their dreams. She created the Astro’s Adventures series and is currently illustrating the seventh book, Neptune’s Trident. Each book Susan creates encourages and promotes the wonderful art of story-telling with organic illustrations and characters that portray similar character traits that the readers’ pets share. Susan shares her home with dogs, in particular, Rocky, Stella, Alfie and Digger, from the Astro’s Adventures series, three rescue guinea pigs, two bossy cats and a very patient husband.

Interview

What is your role in the secret organisation established to save dogs from neglect?

As the only human being in the organisation it is my role to record and illustrate the missions the valiant heroes go on. These tales are recorded in the Astro’s Adventures series of children’s books. The dogs are equipped with special things, brute strength and powers of deduction far beyond any one human being can imagine. Well, to be honest they’re not that clever but they are loyal and dedicated to ensuring every dog has a nice warm bed, lots of toys and a lazy cat to chase. It is my role, no my duty, to make sure every detail of their adventures are set down in story form so young children and learn and appreciate what kind of things their pet dog’s needs. They also make me draw the pictures too.

How much do you get paid for such a service?

Alas, the pay is poor but the conditions are quite good. As all of the characters in the Astro’s Adventures series are real dogs I am lucky enough to share my home with some of them. My payment comes in the form of many licks to the face; being able to sleep on the edge of the bed and having to watch telly from the dining room because there’s no room on the couch. But I keep telling myself how lucky I am to be able to watch TV in the first place.

How long have you been in service to Astro and the gang?

It’s been four years now and I am currently working on the illustrations for their seventh adventure, Neptune’s Trident. It is a rollicking tale of a great sea god who loses his powerful trident. Unbeknown to the dogs, it was actually stolen by the evil genius, Speed Bump Charlie who is going to use it to gain power over all the seas. This way he’ll be able to eat all the fish he likes! There’s a cameo role played by Icky, the ugliest dog in the world and a small orange crab. The dogs learn that the oceans are being polluted by human beings who carelessly toss their rubbish away. It eventually gathers together and forms a huge island. Astro and the team have to battle wits with the nutty sea god Neptune himself, as well as, the wicked pirate catfish. But apart from all this wickedness it’s quite a funny story.
